How to Read Casino Bonus Terms Before You Lose Money on Them

By Casiflow · May 10, 2026

Why Bonuses Exist

Casino bonuses are not acts of generosity. They are customer acquisition tools designed to get you depositing, keep you playing longer than you otherwise would and create enough wagering volume that the house edge does its work before you can withdraw anything.

This does not make bonuses worthless. It means you need to understand what you are actually agreeing to before you accept one. Most players click accept without reading a single line of the terms and then feel confused or frustrated when they cannot withdraw their winnings. The terms were always there. They just were not read.

The Wagering Requirement — The Most Important Number

The wagering requirement is the multiplier that tells you how many times you need to bet the bonus amount before any winnings become withdrawable.

A £100 bonus with a 30x wagering requirement means you need to place £3,000 worth of bets before you can withdraw. A 40x requirement on the same bonus means £4,000 in bets. The higher the multiplier the less likely you are to have anything left by the time you clear it.

The calculation that tells you whether a bonus has positive or negative expected value is straightforward. Multiply the bonus amount by the wagering requirement to get your total required betting volume. Then multiply that by the house edge of the games you plan to play. If the result is larger than the bonus amount the bonus has negative expected value and you are statistically likely to lose more clearing it than it was worth.

A £100 bonus with a 35x wagering requirement requires £3,500 in bets. At a 3% house edge on roulette the expected loss is £105. You are paying £5 for the privilege of receiving a bonus you cannot profitably clear.

Bonus Applies to Deposit Plus Bonus or Bonus Only

This distinction is less well known but it matters significantly.

Some casinos apply the wagering requirement to the bonus amount only. A £100 bonus with 30x wagering means £3,000 in bets to clear.

Other casinos apply it to the deposit plus the bonus. If you deposited £100 to receive a £100 bonus with 30x wagering the total required betting volume becomes £6,000 not £3,000. This doubles the amount you need to wager and halves the practical value of the bonus.

Always check which calculation applies before depositing. It will be in the terms and the difference is enormous.

Game Contributions

Most casinos do not allow all games to contribute equally toward clearing a wagering requirement. Slots typically contribute 100%. Table games like blackjack and roulette often contribute between 10% and 25%. Some games contribute nothing at all.

This matters because the games with the lowest house edge, the ones you should rationally want to play, are often the ones that contribute least toward clearing the bonus. If you want to clear a bonus efficiently you end up pushed toward slots with higher house edges. If you want to play optimal strategy games the bonus takes far longer to clear than the headline wagering requirement suggests.

Check the game contribution table before accepting any bonus. If blackjack contributes 10% toward wagering, a 30x requirement on blackjack is effectively a 300x requirement in terms of actual hand value. The bonus becomes impossible to clear profitably.

Maximum Bet While Bonus Is Active

Most casino bonus terms include a maximum bet limit that applies while you have an active bonus. Commonly this is between £5 and £10 per spin or hand.

Exceeding this limit typically voids the bonus entirely, including any winnings accumulated while playing with it. Players who are unaware of this rule and play at their normal stakes while a bonus is active frequently discover this the hard way when they attempt to withdraw.

This rule exists to prevent players from using bonuses to take high variance shots at large wins. It is entirely legitimate from the casino's perspective and entirely reasonable to find frustrating if you did not know about it.

Expiry Date

Bonus funds and free spins almost always expire. Thirty days is common. Some are as short as seven days. If you do not meet the wagering requirement within the validity period the bonus and any associated winnings are forfeited.

If you are a casual player who plays a few sessions a month a short validity window can make an otherwise reasonable bonus impossible to clear in time. Check the expiry date before accepting and be honest with yourself about whether your normal playing frequency is compatible with the timeline.

The Bonuses That Are Actually Worth Taking

With all of that said some bonuses do have genuine value when approached carefully.

No wagering bonuses are exactly what they sound like. Any winnings from the bonus are immediately withdrawable without meeting any betting requirements. These are relatively rare but they represent straightforward value when the bonus amount is meaningful.

Cashback offers that return a percentage of net losses with no wagering attached are among the most player friendly promotions available. What you see is what you get. There is no clearing requirement and the value is real.

Reload bonuses with low wagering requirements, under 20x ideally, can have positive expected value if you are playing games with a low house edge and the contribution rules allow it.

The habit of reading terms before accepting anything takes two minutes and it is the single most effective thing you can do to stop bonuses costing you more than they give back.

Tracking how each bonus actually affects your results over time is the next step. Most players who do this discover that bonuses have made their overall position worse rather than better. Casiflow tracks your net position across all your casinos so you can see the real impact of every promotion you claim rather than relying on how it felt at the time.
